London Underground Map Crowned the ‘Best’ Innovation this Century

05 April 2012

Visitors to European carpet manufacturer Desso’s stand at EcoBuild voted the London Underground map the most iconic design of the past century. The map has long been an example of fine graphic design and cartographic innovation; simplifying the complex tube network and producing a straight forward representation of its routes with no surface detail except the stations and the River Thames.

At EcoBuild, Desso showcased how the Cradle to Cradle® framework can be a driver of innovation. Based around the company’s three ‘Innovation pillars’: Creativity, Functionality and Cradle to Cradle®, the stand displayed the business’s transition to the circular economy, the thinking on which the Cradle to Cradle concept is based, as well as its latest new products and developments.

This included its latest carpet tiles made from Econyl® (100% recycled content yarn including post-consumer yarn waste from Desso’s Refinity® plant.), its Take Back scheme which takes back used carpets for recycling as well as showing videos from the company’s Refinity® plant which separates old carpet tiles for the recycling process.

Stef Kranendijk, Desso’s CEO, also took to the stage during the event to share his experience of the company’s journey to embrace the Cradle to Cradle® philosophy. The talk was part of EcoBuild’s ‘Sustainable design inspired by nature’ session - known as ‘biomimicry’ – which represents an under-explored territory that can yield imaginative and beautiful architecture while protecting valuable resources. He also appeared as one of the ‘Green Dragons’ in the UK-GBC Big Tent’s special eco-edition of ‘Dragons Den’, where participants pitched new products, approaches and ideas.
